Through this project we noticed a lot of differing classes. One thing we noticed is that in recent years the number of P.E classes out classes the other academic departments. We mostly think it’s due to demand and wanting to make sure that students are able to do their P.E requirment.
There is a limitation to out methods as well. This visualization takes in account the amount of classes that are offered in a department. However, some departments may offer a lot of classes but may not have the faculty to be able to teach classes. So it may not suggest that a particualr department is more popular than another one.
Something that we could have looked into as well for this project is also seeing the amount of majors in each department. That would have allowed us to be able to really see the popularity of each field instead of classes offered. This would have also allowed us to see the divide between humanities and STEM classes.
While exploring throguht is project we learned a lot about how to navigate and clean spreadsheets. As we look back on our experiences there are a couple of points that we wish we ciuld have done differently if we had more time. Such as collecting more data points to see better transitions between departments and to see when different departments really fell off such as the Home Economics department.
Overall, this project allowed us to explore Carleton’s rich and unique history as well as explore the unique courese offered at Carleton.
