This can be seen in our bar chart we created in Flourish, which shows a cumulative total of the top 10 high schools at Carleton each year from 1991 to 2021. In addition to this, we found that 86.3% of students attended public schools and 13.7% attended private schools during these years. Utilizing ArcGIS and spatial analysis, we were able to determine from our heatmap that they was a high density of students coming from Minnesota as well as major West coast and East coast cities.

We also created the following graph that shows the percentage of Carleton students from private schools over time.

Overall, the percentage of students from private schools stays relatively consistent with a large peak in 2016. However, this peak could be due to limited usable data from 2016.

We originally expected to see a larger geographic spread over time. However, our data shows that in state schools consistently send the most students to Carleton. Our findings shows that the percentage of private high school students that attend Carleton College have been roughly the same over the past 30 years. This shows that Carleton has been keeping the playing field roughly even for private and public school students, not giving an advantage to private school students. This may be attributed to Carleton’s need-based financial aid packages and no-fee application among other events. A future group could look into extracting income data and creating an extra layer to overlay on top of our exisiting ArcGIS maps to draw further insights into the socioeconomic factors of Carleton’s admissions.

Based off our research and data visualizations, we can see that the top amount of high schools come from Minnesota.
