Sayles is home to many Carleton traditions, like Friday Flowers, Date Knight events, and Mid-Winter Ball. The building is often considered the hub of campus life, housing the snack bar, bookstore, game room, TV lounge, post office, campus radio station KRLX, and much more.

Given what an important part of Carleton Sayles is, the group thought it would be interesting to sketch a 3D model of the building and embed it on our website. We used SketchUp to generate the model and used this picture of Sayles Hill as reference for the process. The entire procedure only took a couple of hours; the hardest part of generating our rendition of the building was figuring out dimensions and proportions of parts of the building relative to each other. Having had prior experience playing with SketchUp in this class, definitely helped speed up the sketching process. For our purposes, since this wasn’t the primary focus of our project, we only wanted to make a rather simplified version of the building, that was front focussed, so it is intentionally missing a couple of nuances. We’ve included some images of the model here; we were unable to embed the entire interactive model here because the group members only had access to the basic student plan of SketchUp, not the Pro plan that provides this functionality.
