Origins of Carls

Origins of Carls is a project that analyzes and visualizes the socioeconomic backgrounds of Carls using the Zoobooks and finding the hometown data of each student from 2015-2024. We mapped the students against total poverty data and created visualizations of patterns of how student origins changed over 2015-2024.

Final Takeaways

Analyzing the trends in admissions before and after COVID, we noticed no considerable differences in how COVID affected admissions. When looking at the Southwest, which was a region that saw a change in the number of admissions, there could be many different reasons contributing to the difference in admissions besides COVID. The ratio of admitted students from states with previously high admission rates maintained or improved those rates, while states with lower reported enrollment rates maintained or lowered these rates. Keeping poverty data in mind, we have seen that students still come from a diverse range of socioeconomic backgrounds, based on their hometown counties’ total poverty data over the time period of 2015-2024.
