He's out on the walls [of second Laird]. And this goes back to a literary journal called the &lt;em&gt;Carleton Miscellany&lt;/em&gt; that had this [imp] on the cover of that. He's a chimney sweep who was supposed to sweep away arrogance and pretension and bad writing, kind of the soot of bad writing. He's on the cake design [at reading marathons]. So . . . it's kind of like an Easter egg. And also, he's on the back of our [reading marathon] shirts. . . So we think . . . he should be as well known as Schiller at Carleton, because he's very distinctive. . . And then we [the English department] picked him up kind of as our mascot, which is which is a lot of fun because, you know, I don't think any other department has a mascot that's up on the walls and that kind of thing." -Michael Kowalewski</text>
