Armed with 10 years of data, we’ve compiled a quick visualization of Carleton College’s matriculants’ hometowns from 2013 to 2023. The embedded map below is interactive!
From this visualization, I learned that most people who apply are obviously from the United States (specifically Minnesota). Internationally, there is a surprising lack of European students and a consistent number of students from China. Despite a recent push to increase the number of international students, there hasn’t been a substantial increase in their numbers in the last 10 years.
To make this visualization, we first took the provided dataset and removed the non-matriculant data points using OpenRefine. We also had to clean up the data and convert the dates into a format that mapping software recognizes. Next, we created a layer with the dataset using ArcGIS and programmed a timeline slider.
