Interactive Timeline

Why a timeline?

Building a 3D model is time-consuming, so we decided to model one of the MANY buildings proposed for Carleton’s campus. The timeline supplements this model by providing information about multiple proposed buildings. Through the timeline, we are able to cover the history of multiple different proposed buildings throughout Carleton’s History. This gives the user an insight into how different the campus would have been if these buildings had been built. The hope is that future Hacking the Humanities classes will take it upon themselves to 3D model other proposed buildings. This timeline will provide them with the basis for information about proposed buildings to model.

How was it made?

To create an interactive timeline of proposed buildings, we needed to write a short explanation of each building, gather the blueprints for each building, and identify when each building was proposed. Information about each building’s proposal date is available on the Carleton College Archives website. Information about the buildings comes from two sources, including the Timeline – Imagined Futures, Forgotten Pasts, and David Bliss in the archives. Each building description includes the architect, the year of proposal, and the location where the proposed building would have stood. If David or the timeline provided additional insights into its functionality, that is also present in the description. To get images of each building to appear on the timeline we had to host the images on an outside website called ImgBB.

What’s the end result?
