Hazing

Hazing at Carleton a century ago consisted of a lot of competitive and physical games. Due to the time period, hazing only existed for men. However, the sophomore men often were involved with initiating the hazing for freshmen men. For example, the ‘cane rush’ was a wrestling scrap between freshmen and sophomores. The ‘paddle gauntlet’ was a course that freshmen ran through while sophomores hit them with paddles. Finally, the tug-of-war across Lyman Lakes was an annual game where sophomores were on one island and the freshmen were on land, causing the loser of the battle to be tugged into the water between the two. There was also a ‘bouncing day’ where freshmen were thrown into the air by their peers, which you can read about more in the newspaper clip to the left!
