May Fete was an annual pageant for female Carleton students that consisted of dancing and acting. The actual event would take place on Mai Fete Island, while the audience would watch on the hill near the observatory. The dances that were performed were the May Pole Dance, Greek Frieze Dance, Flame Dance, Snowflake Dance, and Spring Dance. Participants wore tutus, florals, and “classical garb.” There were a lot of Greek influences for the overall theme and general vibe of the event, which is evident in the use of Greek columns as decoration and Greek-inspired clothing. It is important to note that some of the pictures include cultural appropriation with the use of teepees, traditional native clothing, and braids by people not of indigenous origin.
