School spirit at Carleton was expressed in many ways even a decade ago through clubs, extracurriculars, events, and everyday activities. Many academic clubs like ‘Der Deutsche Tisch’ (The German Table) or social clubs like ‘Mustache club’ contributed to school spirit on campus, as well as coordinated events like gymnastics exhibitions and mock weddings. Some events like the tree planting still happen today! International clubs like the Carleton Cosmopolitan club also gathered people from similar identities or backgrounds to foster community. However, it’s important to note that some clubs perpetuated racist sentiments by changing their acronyms to ‘KKK’ even if the original was CCC. Learning about this pattern of racism is essential in order for us to address how Carleton clubs work now.
