Imagining America

4 participants

Imagining America aims to imagine an America where the experiences and knowledge of its marginalized community members are embraced in their entirety. Marginalized, for us, means historically underrepresented in relation to class, culture, religion, sexuality, gender, race, ethnicity, and more. Our goal is to connect people through mutual activities and an exploration of mediums (i.e. journaling, embroidery, quilt making, calligraphy, cooking, etc.) steeped with cultural significance. We will be utilizing these artistic mediums to educate the Carleton student body about its history (past, present, and future) while also learning how to use it to creatively tell our own stories and engage with our own complicated identities. Through this educational and hand-on approach to connecting to our own and others’ identities, we hope to foster mutual understanding across our differences and create a community that embodies the very values America has the potential to have.
