Through Hanson’s Eyes

Journeys Across Wartime China

Hardole Hanson (Carleton Class of 1934) traveled across China during the Second Sino-Japanese War, documenting his experiences through photography and journalism. After his death, his family generously donated his photographs to Gould Library. This project presents a curated classification and visual narrative of those images, along with archival materials about Hanson’s life and his work as a foreign correspondent.

We primarily used Carleton’s digital Hanson Collection and Haldore Hanson’s published book as the basis for our interactive data presentation (see the Sources page). For the visual presentation, we used ArcGIS StoryMap and TimelineJS to organize Hanson’s travels, photographs, and personal milestones in an accessible and engaging format (see the Processes page).
