Background
Penguins have a special place in the hearts of all of the students at Carleton. They are used everywhere from admissions recruiting materials, the freshman frisbee designs, to posters for various student organizations and campus events. Although there is no specific penguin that is considered our mascot, Oscar the penguin takes the spotlight for the most well-known penguin on campus.

Oscar is a specimen of an emperor penguin located in the Gould Library. The Gould library was named after Larry McKinley Gould, Carleton’s fourth president and explorer, who collected Oscar during the 1929-1930 expedition to the Antarctic. Oscar was given to the library in honor of Gould and has since been displayed in a glass container across from the front desk of the library.
