Background
As the only “official” mascot, the Knight plays an important role in the Carleton community. The Knight is often associated with Carleton’s athletics; the varsity sports teams are called “the Carleton Knights” or “the Knights.”

The Knight was chosen as Carleton’s official mascot back in 1950 as a salute to the tradition of Homecoming Knight, which died off in the 1970s. Homecoming Knight started in 1922 when a Carleton student who was dressed in linked armor on a horse led the homecoming parade to Laird Stadium while flaunting a spear and shield.
There has always been a question of whether the Knight should represent Carleton students, who often describe themselves as “quirky.” In fact, despite the occasional student movement to replace the Knight as the official mascot with something that is more emblematic of Carleton students’ values such as the penguin, the Knight still manages to secure its position as an official mascot for over 70 years.
