Plant Awareness Disparity
Explore the Maps
This page visualizes the indoor plants documented across several buildings at Carleton College. Using ArcGIS mapping tools, each recorded plant becomes a point on the map, allowing viewers to explore where plants appear and how they are distributed across campus interiors.
Interactive Plant Map
This interactive map allows viewers to explore documented plants across campus buildings. Each plant location includes additional information collected through ArcGIS Survey123, such as plant name, color, location, and an image of the plant.
Plant Distribution Map
While the first map emphasizes individual plants, this second map focuses on spatial distribution. By reducing plants to points, it becomes easier to see broader patterns in where plants are concentrated and where they are absent across campus interiors.
What the Maps Reveal
Together, these maps show that indoor plants are not distributed evenly across campus. Some buildings contain many visible plants, while others contain very few. This uneven distribution suggests that plants are part of how certain campus environments are designed, experienced, and maintained. By mapping these differences, the project makes visible a layer of campus space that often goes unnoticed.
