Reynolds’ letters include racist and disparaging descriptions of foreign people, including Japanese and Chinese individuals. Though we can debate to what extent missionaries were agents of US imperialism, Reynolds nevertheless exhibits a worldview heavily influenced by American stereotypes of the East.
We want to ensure that any readers and viewers understand the severity of Reynolds’ comments. Our project does not encourage or condone any form of discrimination towards marginalized groups or people.
Our number one priority is to tell Mary Reynolds’ story without intercepting its reality with our level of social consciousness in the twenty-first century. We solely present Reynolds’ work with the honesty and transparency that it deserves, and call on you to reflect and challenge the outdated mindsets that shape society today.
