A Carleton Alumna in Late-Qing China
Mary Reynolds, Carleton College class of 1904, was selected by the Minister of China in Washington (Liáng Chéng 梁誠, 1864-1917), to personally tutor the nephews of the Empress Dowager Cixi (慈禧太后, 1801-1908). She traveled to Beijing, China alone and wrote a series of letters detailing her experience between 1904 and 1906. This collection, housed at the Carleton College archives, includes letters to Carleton president Strong, to the Carleton Mission Board, and to a certain Miss Evans. Mary’s letters have never before been digitized, transcribed, or publicly displayed. We hope her letters can provide new insight into early twentieth-century American missionary women. In addition, we ask you to read these letters with an eye for the lives and voices of Mary’s students as they have little historical record.
