Timeline

This timeline was created using TimelineJS. It allows users to explore the distribution of professors’ Bachelor’s degrees, and PhDs across different institutions and how long professors have been at Carleton College. It provides insights into our faculty’s academic diversity and interdisciplinary nature, highlighting patterns and trends. The data for the timeline was taken from Carleton Faculty Directory, and Google Sheets was used to concatenate the data of where the professor got their BA and PhD to create the visually appealing style.

In our timeline, we chose to highlight certain data to increase its clarity. For instance, we chose to have the professor’s name as the pop up in the timeline, rather than the university they went to. Also, many professors got their degrees from the same university, so there would have been many duplicates that would’ve cluttered the timeline.

Our project focuses on the universities where Carleton professors went to college, so we knew we wanted to include where the professors obtained their Bachelor’s degree. We also knew that some people might want to learn more about a specific professor, so we also decided to include the link to the professor’s biography from Carleton’s faculty website, to make it easy for the user to get more information.

It is also important to note that we included a message on the timeline that specifies that this timeline does not include all the professors at Carleton, due to some of them not publicizing the year they started at Carleton.
