Where Carleton Professors Went to College

We created several maps to display the universities that current Carleton professors went to in order to earn their respective degrees. To gather this information we used data from the Carleton faculty directory. We then created our main dataset using Google Sheets. The data extraction procedure included manually copying entries from the directory and pasting them into our Google Sheets dataset. We then cleaned and sorted this data using formulas within Google Sheets to filter out duplicate professors when necessary and also sorted them into categories, including academic department and the year the professor started teaching at Carleton. This data was exported to ArcGIS to create the maps themselves. But before that could be done, we used a Google extension named GeoCode to find the latitude and longitude of each school so that ArcGIS would be able to place the colleges on a map. In ArcGIS many properties were changed to make the maps user friendly, such as adding a label on each pinpoint of the professor’s name and color coding each map based the the type of degree it pertains to. Creating maps of this dataset is the most logical since it easily visualizes the data for an audience and makes it easy to understand. Find the maps on each page below.
